Title IX and Womens' Sports
Oct. 13, 2022 12:00 p.m.
For over 25 years, Laura Beeman has been a standard-bearer in the profession of women’s basketball, leading by example on and off the court while winning championships and helping young ladies full fill their dreams of earning a college education. In the past 10 years, she has upheld her standard at the helm of the University of Hawai‘i, bringing the program back to prominence. Most recently, putting the program in the national spotlight and one to keep an eye on.
In 2016 she led the Rainbow Wahine to its first conference tournament title in 20 years, earning a spot in the NCAA Championship tournament. She did it again in 2022 but made history by coaching the first team in program history to win both the Big West Conference regular-season and conference tournament championship. The 2021-22 campaign was one for the record books for UH as Beeman won her second conference coach of the year honor at UH, and saw its first-ever conference player of the year winner in Amy Atwell. Later, Atwell became only the second player ever from the program to be drafted to the WNBA as she was selected 27th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks.
In her 25 years of roaming the sidelines, Beeman has accumulated over 550 wins, including over 160 at UH. She has been inducted into two Hall of Fames for her contributions to the game and has been named “Coach of the Year” six times while serving as the head coach at two programs. At UH, she has coached 22 All-Big West selections and led the ‘Bows to a total of five national post-season selections.
A native of Bernardino, California, Beeman has a bachelor’s degree in business from CS San Bernardino University, along with two master’s in education, one being from the University of the Redlands in Counseling, the other in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific.

Helping Abandoned Children
Nov. 10, 2022 11:45 a.m.
Even after having to be stitched from rape at seven years old, no one batted an eye about the neglect and torture in our home extending over 14 years. I still have memories of hogties, fist fights, belt lashes, beatings, burns, extension cords whips, sexual abuse, trafficking and more, at the very hands of our such loving foster parents. From birth to 18 years, as a biracial child, I was raised in an all-white foster home with more than 170 children that were abused and beaten. I have finally been able to learn to overcome the PTSD it has caused and write my story with the creativity possible to share these experiences, influence others by my testimony, and describe how this suffering has transformed my life to understanding love. I have been firsthand witness to some of the perversion by our governmental agencies, police, and the abuse by people in power; this is a huge problem that extends on every level of government. These experiences have sparked a deep passion to help support other children that have been victim to trafficking. I put myself through college and worked in healthcare management before I decided to start managing my own dreams, which then led to the registration of my non-profit organization: L.I.F.E.H.O.U.S.E. Our work includes the removal and placement of children, aftercare of children, and development of life skill programs and educational resources for the children we serve. We have worked with courts, police, other safe houses, even coming face to face to pimps to confront, protect, help rescue girls from their grasps. In April, 2020, “Learning to Love” was also published to help raise funding for our organization. This autobiographical novel shares these experiences and my journey to find self-love, sanity, hope, and life, while also exposing the corruption of the government systems of child welfare and trafficking. After growing up sexually, emotionally, and mentally abused in the foster care system, Shellilyn Marie decided she had had enough. With memories of hogties, fist fights, belt lashes, beatings, burns, extension cord whips, sexual abuse, trafficking annd more at the hands of foster parents, she put herself through college in nursing and healthcare administration. She later started L.I.F.E.H.O.U.S.E, a nonprofit to help abanndoned and trafficked children to provide them with education, housing, and a home life in an energy efficient, self-sustainable community. Join us to learn more about her story and her tremendous efforts on behalf of Hawaii's abandoned children. With Thanksgiving just a couple days away the Club will help Aloha Harvest to pack 350 bags of food that will be distributed to people at homeless shelters, churches and other organizations in need of food for their clients. Aloha Harvest "rescues" food from area restaurants, then repacks and distributes food that would have otherwise gone to waste. In both October 2020 and April 2021, Aloha Harvest donated food for the Ala Moana Rotary Club to distribute to the families at Lunalilo Elementary School. We need 15 people for this packing event. Let Lani know you'll join us and get directions to the warehouse. |

Dec. 01, 2022 11:50 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
It's hard for a kid to be a kid when faced with a life threatening illness. Their days are filled with doctors, hospitals and treatments. Enter the Make a Wish Foundation. Make a Wish takes children out of the day to day of their illness by granting a wish. Some wishes are simple, like a family trip to Disney. Others are more involved like Lyla, who wante to be a Navy Seal for a day and Charlotte who wanted to meet a unicorn. Make a Wish unites families, friends, and communities for life changing experiences. 99% of doctors say the Wish experience helped families to deal with the trauma. 87% of recipients say the wish was a turning point in their treatment. Trini Kaopuiki Clark is the President & CEO of Make a Wish Hawaii, where thousands of wishes have been granted. She wants to share with us the story of Make a Wish and why what they do matters. Developed by the residents of Oahu, and in partnership with the City and County of Honolulu and the Oahu Visitors Bureau (OVB), the Oahu DMAP identifies areas of need as well as solutions for enhancing the residents’ quality of life and improving the visitor experience. A Walk Through Time With the Lane Collection
Jan. 12, 2023 11:50 a.m.
What started out as curiosity when shown pictures of Kobe, Japan, as a first grader in Seattle, Washington, morphed into a 35-year accomplished career in Japanese literature studies for Bob Huey.
After receiving his BA from Puget Sound University, Bob found himself teaching English in Japan. Shortly thereafter he achieved an MA and PhD at Stanford in Japanese Literature. He was hired at the University of Hawaii as Professor of Japanese Literature in 1985 where he taught until his retirement in 2021.
He is widely recognized for his expertise in classical and medieval Japanese poetry, Japanese culture in the Ryukyu Kingdom, and Okinawan studies. He has served as a member of the University of the Ryukyu Management Council since 2009 and is currently a Board member for the Urasenke Hawaii Foundation and Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation.
Huey has authored many works including monographs, articles, and book chapters, among others. In 2014, he edited English translations of all entries in the Sakamaki-Hawley Collection database published on the University of the Ryukyu library website.
In 2019, Huey was presented the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon by Honolulu Consul General Koichi Ito for his “contribution to the development of Japanese studies in the United States of America and strengthening the friendly relationship and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.”
