Letter from Club Foundation Chair
Dear Members and Friends of the Rotary Club of Ala Moana!

I am honored to be your club's Rotary Foundation Committee Chair.  This year, I am fortunate to have a committee to support our members with our Foundation efforts. Allow me to introduce your committee:
  • Akiko Sakamoto
  • Duane Fujii
  • Konrad Ikei
  • Mary Ann Berry
  • Sonya Mendez
We are trying something different this Rotary year.  We want to send you a periodic newsletter focused only on Foundation matters.  We welcome your feedback.  Let us know what you want to learn more about and how we can raise more funds to the Foundation.
Our Very Own, Sam Shenkus, Becomes Major Donor Level II!
Type captionCongratulations to Sam Shenkus, as she is one of a few members in our club to become a Level II Major Donor.  Sam shared with the members how and why she donates to the Foundation.  For her, she feels blessed to have the means to donate and does so generously when it's time to pay membership dues.  Our membership dues statement includes a line item for donations to the Rotary Foundation, PolioPlus, Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation, the Rotary Club of Ala Moana D5000 Fund and The Rotary Club of Ala Moana Anniversary Fund.

One way that members can donate is Rotary Direct.  here
Help Us Become an EREY Club!
"Every Rotarian, Every Year" (EREY) means that each Rotarian contributes at least $25 to TRF’s Annual Fund.  Whether through Happy Dollars, donations during our semi-annual dues statements, or setting up Rotary Direct, if each Rotary member in our club has contributed at least $25 to the Annual Fund in this Rotary year, we will become an EREY club.

Rotary International invests in our donations for three years.  We then receive a significant percentage back as District Designated Funds. We get to use District Designated Funds for approved purposes such as global projects, district grants, and even local community services and scholarships.

Using Rotary Direct can help you manage your giving.  With a minimum donation of $25.00, you can give that amount monthly, quarterly, or annually.  If you prefer to complete a form instead of a transaction online, complete your form and submit it to your Rotary Foundation Committee.

Rotary Foundation Moment
A Story about a VW Van... in Thailand... 14 Years Ago... and Today 2024
by Rich Courson

In 2010, the Rotary Club of Ala Moana partnered with the Tom Vincent Foundation and with a Matching Grant, provided the funds to purchase a Van for the Father Ray orphanage in Pattaya, Thailand.  Today, this would be called a Global Grant.

The Van was called The Hula Van and was treasured by all in the orphanage as a major means of transportation for students to various schools and training sites in the area.

My wife and I visited the orphanage this past June and were welcomed as the Rotarian representing a partial donor of the Van.  We were thrilled to learn that the Hula Van is still in good shape and operating as a major source of transportation for the orphanage.  They are currently caring for 850 children and people with disabilities.

This is a true sustainable project and a great example of our Rotary dollars at work, 14 years later.
