Letter from Club Foundation Chair
Dear Members and Friends of the Rotary Club of Ala Moana,
I am honored to be your club's Rotary Foundation Committee Chair.  This year, I am fortunate to have a committee to support our members with our Foundation efforts. Allow me to introduce your committee:
  • Akiko Sakamoto
  • Duane Fujii
  • Konrad Ikei
  • Mary Ann Berry
  • Sonya Mendez
We are trying something different this Rotary year.  We want to send you a periodic newsletter focused only on Foundation matters.  We welcome your feedback.  Let us know what you want to learn more about and your ideas on how we can raise more funds for The Rotary Foundation.
Our Very Own, Sam Shenkus, Becomes Major Donor Level II!
Congratulations to Sam Shenkus, as she is one of a few members in our club to become a Level II Major Donor.  Sam shared with the members how and why she donates to The Foundation over the past 35+ years that she has been a member.  For her, she feels blessed to have the means to donate and does so generously when it's time to pay membership dues.  Our membership dues statement includes a line item for donations to The Rotary Foundation, PolioPlus, Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation, the Rotary Club of Ala Moana D5000 Fund and The Rotary Club of Ala Moana Anniversary Fund.

One easy way that members can donate to The Foundation is with Rotary Direct.
WORLD POLIO DAY  October 24, 2024
Again this year, we will celebrate the hard work of those who work tirelessly to see that Rotary's goal to End Polio comes true. We must fulfill the promise we made to the Children of the World, back in 1985.
More than half the amount The Rotary Foundation spent last year was for polio eradication.
Immunizing over 800 million children every year is an expensive proposition. Some of the cost is for the development and production of the vaccine, transportation, refrigeration, coolers, constant evaluation of the program and stipends for front line workers, who gain the trust of the parents to allow their children to be immunized. Thankfully through our good relations, security for workers is provided by local governments.
Because there are many places in the world today, that create barriers to immunizing all the children, it is challenging to continue to make headway.
Our partners along with Rotary International, are totally committed and will see this through, but we need your support. Please help with your donations to Polio Plus whenever you can.  Together, we will get this done.

Rotary Foundation Moment
A Story about a Van... in Thailand... 14 Years Ago... and Today 2024
by Rich Courson

In 2010, the Rotary Club of Ala Moana partnered with the Tom Vincent Foundation and with a Matching Grant, we helped provide the funds to purchase a van for the Father Ray Orphanage in Pattaya, Thailand.  Today, this would be called a Global Grant.

The van was named The Hula Van and was treasured by all in the orphanage as a major means of transportation for students to various schools and training sites in the area.

My wife and I visited the orphanage this past June, 2024 and were welcomed as the Rotarian representing a major donor of the Hula Van.  We were thrilled to learn that the Hula Van is still in very good shape and operating as a daily source of transportation for the orphanage.  They are currently caring for over 850 children and people with disabilities!

This truly is a sustainable project and a great example of what our Rotary dollars can do.  Still working 14 years later.
