The Rotary Club of Ala Moana will assist with a hands-on service project at Lanakila Meals on Wheels, packing meals for those in need and ensuring that no kupuna goes hungry. What to Expect: When: Saturdays July 19 2025, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM (the shift typically takes 2 hours but may run longer depending on your group size.) Why: A rewarding team-building experience that directly benefits local seniors “Lanakila Meals on Wheels is a vital program of Lanakila Pacific, an organization committed to building independence for individuals with disabilities and seniors in need. What started as a small lunch wagon at ‘A’ala Park has grown into a lifeline for hundreds of seniors each year.” “Lanakila meals are fully cooked, frozen, and made from scratch in-house by Lanakila Kitchen employees and volunteers. Inspiring Service: A Vision for Rotary in 2025–26

Nancy Cabral, the 2025–26 District Governor for Rotary District 5000, made history as the first woman to join the Rotary Club of Hilo on January 29, 1988, and served as the club’s Centennial President during its 100th year in 2020–21. A dynamic community leader and entrepreneur, she built Day‑Lum Rentals & Management into the largest property management firm on Hawaiʻi Island, and operated the Coldwell Banker Day‑Lum Properties branch for nearly three decades. In 2025, Nancy received the YWCA’s “Remarkable People” honor and was named one of Pacific Business News’ “Women Who Mean Business.” Additional accolades include the SBA Hawaiʻi Women-Owned Business of the Year.
She holds leadership roles in organizations including the Hawaiʻi State Land Use Commission, Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center, Hawai‘i Community Foundation, and the H.C. Shipman Foundation.

Our club will be lending a helping hand at the Hawai‘i Foodbank for The Senior Food Box Program (Commodity Supplemental Food Program – CSFP), which provides monthly boxes of quality USDA food to low-income kūpuna. Guest speaker Maureen Purington is an innovative nonprofit leader with a proven track record of building sustainable funding and programs that put families first. Since December 2023, she has served as Executive Director of HUGS (Help, Understanding & Group Support), leading statewide efforts to support Hawai‘i families navigating the challenges of caring for a seriously ill child. Prior to joining HUGS, Maureen spent 15 years as Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i’s Windward Clubhouse in Kailua, transforming it into a nationally recognized, high-performing Clubhouse. Under her leadership, daily attendance grew from fewer than 10 youth to more than 160, the annual budget more than tripled, and a $7.5 million capital campaign brought a new state-of-the-art clubhouse to life. She is known for her hands-on leadership, nurturing staff so they can fully support the children and families they serve, and for her deep commitment to strengthening communities across Hawai‘i. |

Join us in making a difference for families caring for seriously ill children by supporting HUGS Hawai‘i—Help, Understanding, and Group Support. This incredible program strengthens Hawai‘i’s families by providing them with a much-needed break from the constant demands of caregiving. For November’s Monthly Respite Program, our club will run the games and activities for HUGS children and their siblings (ages 6 months to 12 years), creating a safe, supportive space filled with fun and laughter. Each child will have a dedicated buddy for one-on-one attention and encouragement. We’ll also host a dinner buffet for the kids, giving parents the gift of time to relax, recharge, or tend to personal needs. This is a hands-on service opportunity to bring joy, connection, and relief to families who need it most.
